Retirement....Am I doing it "right"? 🤔

Hey there, Reader!

I love to sing in the shower.

Today’s song of choice? Alone by Heart.

You know the one—Ann Wilson hits that window-shattering high note like nobody else.

As a lifelong Heart fan, I’ll admit I don’t actually know all the lyrics to that particular song…and I definitely can’t hit those high notes. The result is my own improvised, lower-key version—let’s call it Alto Alone. Probably not what the Wilson sisters had in mind, but hey—I'm making it my own.

And if you think about it, retirement’s kind of the same way.

It’s easy to look around and wonder, “Am I doing this right?”

If you’re not sipping drinks with little umbrellas or playing pickleball five days a week, you may feel like you missed some sort of “retirement memo.” But the truth is, we all have our own “key,” our own rhythm.

Take me, for example.

My version of retirement might look like work to someone else—I love building websites, learning how to use new tech tools, and writing to you like this. These things light me up. It may not be everyone's dream retirement...but it’s mine.

If you’ve ever caught yourself wondering whether you’re “doing retirement right,” let this be your reminder:

You are.

If it feels meaningful to you, you’re on the right track.

Still figuring it out? That’s okay, too. We created the Joyful Retirement Blueprint to help you explore what brings you joy—your way, no comparison needed.

Hey there, Reader! As this year winds down, I’ve been thinking about how tempting it is to believe that the “best parts” of life are already behind us—especially after a big transition like retirement. This sentiment from Ralph Waldo Emerson feels especially fitting right now: In other words: nothing has been used up. There is still richness ahead. Still sweetness. Still meaning waiting to be poured. As the calendar flips toward 2026, instead of asking What should I do next? we invite you to...

Hey there, Reader! We’ve been on a bit of a hiatus recently. In October, Larissa and I helped move my mom into an independent living retirement community. It was a ton of work, but well worth it. She’s now settled in her new place and is absolutely LOVING IT! As we helped her shop around, we visited quite a few communities, and I’ve got to say that I fell in love with the idea of living in a retirement community when I’m older. I know it’s not for everyone (and honestly, I’d never considered...

close up of paper in a typewriter; typed words: That's my story

Hey there, Reader! The other day, my dad shared a story that made me smile. It was a simple memory that opened a little window into my family history. Here’s the story, in my dad’s words: It was a hot summer day in the ‘50s on Leal St, where I grew up. No air conditioning, so everyone had their windows open. My grandmother, Mamá María, was visiting. She was in the kitchen cooking. I opened a closet to look for something and saw a small case that looked like it might hold a tiny guitar. I...
